Vending Cart Operator – Oregon Zoo

LOCATION:         Oregon Zoo, Portland OR

RATE OF PAY:    $15 an hour

HOURS:                 40 hours per week: May through September, evenings and weekends required


Are you looking for a unique, rewarding, summer employment experience?  New Avenues for Youth, a Portland Non-Profit organization, owns and operates two Ben & Jerry’s Partner Shops in the downtown area.  In addition to serving delicious ice cream to the local community, these Partner Shops provide job training and employment opportunities for foster, at-risk, and homeless youth in New Avenues for Youth’s programs. This summer we will be launching an exciting new vending operation at the Oregon Zoo, which will be open to zoo guests 7 days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

The Position: 

The Cart Operator will assist in planning and primarily manage the operations associated with piloting this unique vending opportunity at the Oregon Zoo.  The Cart Operator will oversee internal controls, manage inventory and operations, and essentially function as a small business owner. The Cart Operator will provide direct, hands-on training support to team of youth staff focusing on daily operations, customer service, and cleanliness.

Knowledge & Skills:  

Entrepreneurial drive and skills, interest in socially responsible business, strong communication skills both interpersonally and in group settings, a minimum of two years’ experience in retail/food service operations, ability to manage people effectively, planning/inventory management skills.
