Special thanks to Bokkereyder for hosting our 2018 101% Lambic Tasting

Learn more about this special lambic exploration tasting with Raf Souvereyns.

Lambic beers have a sense of place unlike any other beer style.  Although the breweries are located in the same Pajottenland area, every brewery houses its own mix of native yeasts and bacteria, freely flowing through the air and falling down in the wort during its overnight exposure to the air in the coolship.  In this tasting, we explored four different lambics and four different gueuze blends.

First, we tasted four lambics side by side to discover the different aromas, flavors, and characteristics.  Then we tasted four gueuze blends made with the same lambics.  Each gueuze blend has 50% of one lambic and equal proportions of the other lambics.  Through this tasting, we discovered how the different lambics develop together in the bottle.

The four lambics included:

  • 1 yr-old Girardin
  • 1 yr-old De Troch
  • 1 yr-old Lindemans
  • 1 yr-old Bokkereyder

The four gueuzes included:

  • 50% Girardin, 17% De Troch, 17% Lindemans, 17% Bokkereyder
  • 50% De Troch, 17% Girardin, 17$ Lindemans, 17% Bokkereyder
  • 50% Lindemans, 17% Girardin, 17% De Troch, 17% Bokkereyder
  • 50% Bokkereyder, 17% Girardin, 17% De Troch, 17% Lindemans

Special thanks to our 2018 Guest Brewers,  Jester King Brewery from Austin, Texas and pFriem Family Brewers from Hood River, Oregon, who were featured at our 2018 Brewers Dinner, with cuisine from Portland chef Connor Martin.

Jester King Brewery:  Set on a 200-acre ranch outside Austin, Texas, Jester King is an authentic farmhouse brewery committed to mixed culture and spontaneous fermentation.  Founded in 2010 by Jeffrey Stuffings and Michael Steffing, the brewery produces only about 1,500 barrels annually; we’re honored to highlight their highly sought-after beer at this year’s Brewers Dinner.

pFriem Family Brewers: Since 2012, this Hood River, Oregon brewery has produced award-winning Belgian and German inspired beers, most recently earning the distinction of being named Brewery of the Year at the 2018 Oregon Beer Awards.  Josh Pfreim, Ken Whiteman and Rudy Kellner are the visionaries behind pFriem Family Brewers, and we’re grateful to them for sharing some of their most special beers at this year’s Brewers dinner.

Our 2018 Oyster and Gueuze Social featured special bottle pours from Cantillon, a bottle auction, a selection of draft lambic, and plenty of freshly shucked oysters on the half shell!

Our Oyster & Gueuze Social featured kegs from Cantillon, Tilquin and more, delicious oysters and a location with amazing downtown views!

We offered free pours of Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze Cuvée Armand & Gaston and Drie Fonteinen Hommage, as well as some special pours for purchase.  Pours for puchase include Cantillon’s Lambic Vin Jaune and Lambic Cinsault, and Bokkereyder’s Oma and Uli Brews for New Avenues blend.

A portion of the proceeds from pour sales and silent auction items benefitted nonprofit Justine for Kids, whose mission is to support sick and disabled children, their families and pediatric centers in Belgium.
